December 7, 2024 – Alpha Chi Omega sisters organized meaningful tributes for Ellie Sims’ 21st birthday. Tragically, Ellie passed away in April after being struck by a vehicle – this being her first heavenly birthday – ladies worked to find ways to honor and celebrate her …

Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Delta Chapter at Florida State University scheduled a 5k for their Founders Day with proceeds going to their philanthropy – March of Dimes. Knowing Ellie was an avid runner, Alpha Chi’s VP of Philanthropy, Claire reached out to partner for the race. The gentleman said yes, and the sorority partnered with the Alpha Phi Alpha Race Chair – Dadreion, to plan, promote, and host a 5K run/walk event. Nearly 100 Alpha Chi members, local alumnae, and parents participated in the 5K and Approximately 200 total attendees joined the event. Many in attendance wore teal to honor Ellie’s favorite color, and the chapter passed our teal ribbons to attendees. Before the race began, we came together for a group photo and wished Ellie a “Happy Birthday.” It was an emotional and unforgettable moment.
When asked about the event Claire, shared “Working alongside the Alphas to raise funds for March of Dimes and promote awareness for pedestrian safety in Ellie’s honor was a deeply fulfilling experience. The 5k event exceeded all expectations, bringing together the Tallahassee community, Florida State University, and beyond. I couldn’t have imagined a more meaningful way to wrap up my term as VP of Philanthropy. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who supported this event and to Alpha Phi Alpha for partnering with me to make it possible. 💛🩵”

After the race, Alpha Chi Omega provided participants with donuts, Ellie’s favorite dessert. The gentleman of Alpha Phi Alpha even included teal balloons at the finish line.

Following the race, Alpha Chi Omega partnered with Nuberri, a local frozen yogurt store, to host a share-it-day, with 20% of proceeds going to the Ellie Sims Endowed Memorial Scholarship fund.

While we wish nothing more than for Ellie to be with us celebrating, we know she was with us in spirit. The day was bittersweet, as is the nature of grief and celebration. Each action acknowledged the deep longing to have Ellie physically present while finding comfort in her spiritual presence.
