LGBTQ persons in Florida are now protected from housing and workforce discrimination. One of DeSantis’s appointees to the Commission, Commissioner MonicaCepero of Fort Lauderdale made the motion to affirm the ruling. Check out the full article via the link below.
Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity, Inc. Capstone Leadership Program launched this week. From today until the beginning of May, rising juniors and seniors will attend bi-weekly meetings to enhance their leadership skills, learn from executive mentors and alumnae coaches, and network with other real, strong women. Through this experience collegiate participants will see how their experience within the chapter can be translated into their professional life. We are excited to share two Beta Eta (BH) alumnae are serving as mentors – Jackie Rovine and Monica Cepero & BH Collegian Ayva Oberman is participating.
Monica Cepero is a MC ’88 initiate of Beta Eta while attending Florida State. She currently serves as the Deputy County Administrator for Broward County Government and serves as an appointee on the Florida Commission on Human Relations.
Jackie is a MC ’98 Initiate of Beta Eta, while attending Florida State University. She also has a B.S in Mass Media Studies from NYU and her JD from New York Law. She currently serves as an Associate General Counsel for Facebook.
Collegian Ayva Oberman is a MC ’18 initiate and current junior. Ayva is majoring in Public Health with a minor in Family and Child Sciences. She serves as the 2021 VP Membership Programming for Beta Eta.
A yearly favorite made COVID-19 friendly in 2021. The Chapter’s annual Galentines dinner may have looked different with multiple shifts with signups to ensure the chapter was under the 50 person cap and hour time frame.
The kitchen staff, house director, chapter advisor and amazing VP Risk Management Bree Sutherland worked to ensure the event still took place! Complete with individually plated and served salads, elevated main course (Chicken and Eggplant Parmesan) & Chocolate covered strawberries for dessert.
The event also had an interactive #loveis … wall, spaced out photo opportunities and took place in the downstairs of the chapter house with tables spaced 6ft apart with reduced seating and a to go pick up option.
Thanks to the diligence of the NME 2021 committee (Lila, Bri, Alex, Lucy, Amelia, Morgan, Zoe), the newest members of Beta Eta are loving, learning and leading.
Meetings include Mystagogue Reveals (with snacks, so the duos can chat as the snack); Mystagogue sursies*; and The Heights (Dedication). The new members review 4-5 The Heights modules they completed the previous week; meet more initiated sisters theough Reveals; and get dedicated time with each Exec Board member who are invited speakers!
After their condensed six week new member period (shortened because they got to enjoy an intense amount of time together and were easily incorporated by their small numbers into other chapter activities) our newest sisters will be considered part of the fall MC20 class and will bond with them for recruitment and the future. We find this really adds to the connections sisters make and help to keep them feeling connected to the larger chapter. ❤️💚
Two days + 15 Real.Strong.Women Executive Board Officers = fun, and of course, Wisdom.Devotion.Achievement as the sisters discussed and planned to Discover*Grow*Engage*Sustain sisterhood.
The professional life of an Alpha Chi Omega Exec Board Member – preparing for life! Thank you Hotel Indigo (and shout out to advisor and aluma Lina!)
Sursies! Everything a busy professional needs …
How are we showcasing the Real.Strong.Women. Experience to our members and our community while embracing our Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan.
Oh, you wanted a montage of the fun? Then enjoy the below photos from Ritual ice breakers, to “‘Why did I…?’ get to know you’s” (and a peek at two members of our Advisory Board who helped set up/break down/facilitate. Thanks Xi Omega Xi and Epsilon Tau Epsilon alumnae chapters.)
Nina and Kait were both selected for FSU’s Freshman Leadership Institute. They set the bar for our External Affairs Coordinator (Caroline Rinker, MP committee) when she gives examples on how sisters can seek to improve themselves and FSU and Alpha Chi.
Kait plans to graduate with a double major and head to law school. She completed the eight week class and can’t wait to do more and say YES to other opportunities. In Alpha Chi she serves as the Refuge House Liaison and on the DEI committee.
Nina’s focus is engineering, and she knows she also yearns to work in public policy. She is looking at SGA positions ahe might serve well and in Alpha Chi she serves on and attends Bible Study.
These are two Real.Strong.Women. whose dynamic and earnest focus inspires us!
Our local alumnae chapter Epsilon Tau Epsilon didn’t let a pandemic stop them from sharing Hall of Commitment with us. In the Spring they hosted it via Zoom and in the Fall they hosted at the house. December graduation is usually smaller, so we were able to gather safely, six feet apart, with masks in the Formal Living Room and share our ritual. Thanks so much for all our seniors contributed to the chapter during their time at FSU and sending appreciation to our dedicated alumnae (now we can add to the alumnae ranks!)
Paris T (President 2020), Sam K (DVA Liaison 2020), Jessi B (Mock Trial Queen), Elise A (Warden 2020), Kendall W (Sporty Spice!), Kala S (she’s spotlighted!)Morgan D (headed to DPT school), JSBH (advisor), Tiffany F (landed a J-O-B!), Allie (headed to grad school and engaged), Britain (advisor), Jordan (headed to grad school!), Kellee (headed to grad school!), Emily M (living large in NYC)
Kala grew up in Jacksonville and will graduate Fall 2020 with a Master’s in Public Relations with a Minor in Spanish and Recreation, Tourism and Events. At Beta Eta she served as Freshman Intellectual Development chair, fundraising chair for three semesters, and co-technology chair for 2020 Recruitment. On campus she volunteered as Co-Director of Public Relations 2020 Light the Night Executive Board.
During Summer and Fall 2020 Kala interned for Three Grains of Rice Ministries in Jacksonville. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting people to volunteer opportunities in the area. Specifically, they work with other non-profits serving the homeless, women, children and the Hispanic community to allocate funds and resources.
Kala helped produce a newsletter and collaborate on their website. Kala’s internship allowed her to practice her communication skills even during the pandemic. The opportunities at Three Grains of Rice, Alpha Chi Omega and Light the Night taught her more about non-profit management and allowed her to flex her fundraising abilities, strengthen her leadership aptitude, and understand group dynamics, and prepare Kala to segue into pursuing her dream job of fundraising management.
(R to L – Sarah Morris, Kala Scott, Jenna Dake, LTN Exec)
Light the Night spreads awareness and advocates for those whose lives are affected by blood cancers, such as leukemia, myeloma, and lymphoma. The FSU organization plans the Tallahassee Light The Night Walk, the annual fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Teams adjusted this year to a virtual walk and look forward to being back at the annual event on Langford Green November 2021.
Alpha Chi Omegas embraced #LTN with three sisters serving on the Executive Board: Vice President of Recruitment – Jenna Dake, junior and Co-Directors of Public Relations – Sarah Morris, junior and Kala Scott, senior.
Lexi, Jenna, Natalie at The 518 celebrating
Lexi Larkin, MC19, was the chapter’s chair for the event. Her work inspired her to run for Beta Eta’s 2021 VP Philanthropy position (and she won.) We look forward to supporting Lexi and committee’s ideas for #LTN, #R4L, #TheBigEvent, Leon County community service events; connecting with Refuge House; Healthy Relationships Week and Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi (February); Denim Day (during Sexual Violence Awareness Month in April); and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Donuts for DVA and DVA Gala (October) … and more!
Two more proud Beta Eta moments:
The chapter was First in fundraising this year! And MC20 Lauren Haines, sophomore from Jacksonville, was 4th highest fundraiser bringing $570 to the charity.
